Capodimonte Museum

Capodimonte museum, once the Capodimonte royal Palace, with a wonderful and huge gardens and his wood, was one of the royal residences of the Bourbons. It is located on the Capodimonte hill, from which there are wonderful views of Vesuvius, the volcan of Naples, San Martino, where Saint Elmo Castle is located and Posillipo, one of the beautiful hills of the city of Naples.
The king of Naples Charles of Bourbon needed a place to place the works of the Farnese collection, inherited from his mother (Elisabetta Farnese). So he decided to build a new residence on the Posillipo hill. The works began in 1738 and after a century they were completed. But it was already inaugurated in 1755.
At that time this place was rich in game and also became the king's place for hunting.

Today in the 126 rooms of the Capodimonte museum about 47,000 works by artists of the past such as Caravaggio, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Titian, Raphael, and many other artists of the past are exhibited.

By Shuttle Capodimonte (city-sightseeing tourist bus)

The bus station of the shuttle is located in piazza castello (adjacent to the Maschio Angioino in Piazza del Municipio). Taking this bus you have discounts on at Capodimonte museum ticket office by presenting the return tickets of the Capodimonte Shuttle.

Catacombs of San Gennaro

The Catacombs of San Gennaro are located back the Basilica of the crowned Mother of Good Counsel (in itlalian, basilica dell' Incoronata Madre del Buon Consiglio) and they are underground tombs that date back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries.
On the walls we can see some frescoes depicting the deceaseds. Not all tombs are decorated, in fact it depends on the late's family wealth.

On the way of Capodimonte hill, there is the Basilica of the crowned Mother of Good Counsel (in Italian Incoronata Madre del buon consiglio) was strongly desired by Maria Landi, a humble servant of God, who since she was a child she has always been devout to the blessed Virgin.

The beginning of its construction dates back to 06 January 1920 and lasted 40 years. The day of the consecration was April 26, 1960.
The Basilica is considered "the little St. Peter's" because it was built following the original Vatican model, both for the interior and for the dome.

Some legends:

• In 1884 Maria Landi showed her people a picture of her with the image of the Mother of Good Counsel and immediately the cholera epidemic ceased.
• In 1906 the volcano of Naples erupted and the entire city was copvered by ashes and lapillus. Maria Landi again exhibited the painting outside the balcony and after a few days Vesuvius ceased its volcanic activities.
